Mishaal Surti is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and its Faculty of Education where he was awarded the Don Wright Scholarship in Vocal Music, and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology where he completed a Masters of Education in Educational Leadership and Learning Technology.
A South Asian-Canadian educator, choral conductor, singer, and performer based in Toronto, Ontario, Mishaal has conducted performances and facilitated workshops on music education and the male changing voice for Choral Canada/The Association of Canadian Choral Communities, the Ontario Music Educators’ Association, the Ontario Ministry of Education, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Toronto, the Educational Computing Organization of Ontario, and school boards across Ontario. Mishaal has also been published in the national and provincial journals of the Canadian Music Educators’ Association and Ontario Music Educators’ Association.
As a choral composer, Mishaal is published by Cypress Choral Music and the Tracy Wong Series (distributed by Graphite Publishing), is a MusicSpoke composer, and has been commissioned by organizations and ensembles throughout Canada, including the Exultate Chamber Singers, the Amabile Choirs of London, Canada, the Coalition for Music Education in Canada, and a commissioning project by Dr. Tracy Wong supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Mishaal has had his compositions and arrangements performed throughout Canada, Austria, Belgium, China, Germany, Hong Kong and the United States of America, including at Europa Cantat, the ACDA National Conference, and the Luminato Festival. Beginning as a choral singer with the Amabile Choirs of London, Ontario, Mishaal has performed throughout Canada, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, and the United States of America, and continues to perform throughout Canada with local choral ensembles and as a freelance musician.
Mishaal has held education and executive leadership positions throughout Ontario, including with the Ontario Ministry of Education, Western University, University of Windsor, Fanshawe College and the Thames Valley District School Board. Mishaal continues to engage educators and system leaders in integrating evidence-based pedagogical strategies and system practices that inspire innovation, critical thinking, and inquiry in the classroom. This has included facilitating keynote and conference sessions across North America designed to promote student success, student engagement, and innovative practices in educational pedagogy for the Public Sector Network, the Global Math Department, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, the Educational Computing Organization of Ontario, EdTech Canada, the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education, Western University, York University, Ontario Tech University, the University of Toronto, the Ontario Ministry of Education and school boards across Ontario.
